Advent Season

Four weeks before Christmas, the Church begins the Season of Advent. It is time of preparation for the great feast of Christmas when we celebrate again the birthday of Jesus.

Advent is a Church word. It is not mentioned on the television or the radio. Daily newspaper don’t mention it either, not do we see it in the shopping malls.

This Advent let us take time to reflect on the Scripture readings as they speak to us of the coming of Jesus into our world. Let us be aware of our need for Him and appreciate the many ways that Jesus touches and influences our lives each day. Thus we will be able to truly welcome Him into our hearts this Christmas.

The Advent Wreath is blessed after the homily of the Mass on the First Sunday or the evening before the First Sunday of Advent. On the succeeding Sunday of Advent, the candles are lit before the Mass begins; no additional prayers or rites are used.

In the traditional Spirit of Mater Dolorosa, our annual giving Christmas Tree will be up in the vestibule of the Church, beginning this weekend through December 16th, For your convenience, we would like you to purchase Target gift card rather than individually wrapped gifts for the needy families of our parish community. There will be “ornament” tags on the Giving Tree that indicate purchasing a $10.00 gift card – pick up one, two or as many “ornaments” as you’d like! Please bring the gift cards to Rosemary Whittle in the Rectory . As always, we thank you for all of your generosity and support. We wish you and your families a very blessed Christmas Season.

Join Father Brian on a 15-day Pilgrimage to the Holy Land and Italy, in June 2006. Visit Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Nazareth, Galilee, Jericho and the Dead Sea, in the Holy Land; Assisi, Siena and Rome, in Italy. For more information, contact Jim Sullivan, Tour Leader, at (650)321-4534.
