Our Second Collection this Sunday is for our Parish Improvement Fund. Our Second Collection next week is for Priest’s Retirement. Please be as generous as you can.

Thank you!

Dear Friends,

As the new school year gets underway, change is in the air. As your children get used to a new teacher, and as summer winds down to fall, so there are changes with Mater Dolorosa as well.

The cost of running the parish has gone up (did you ever know it to go down?). With Bill Ruggiero as Parish Administrator, along with the Parish Administrative Assistant, Fran Lidwell, the Housekeeper, Linda Willis, and the cook, Frances Wood, I have had to raise salaries to meet Archdiocesan standards. The salaries are still low compared to what most people make, but they are more fair and more just than what they were previously getting. The cost of running the parish for the week is now at $6,300.00. We have 900 registered families, about half of which (450 families) support the parish on a regular basis. For those of you who give on a weekly basis, I can’t thank you enough. For those of you who don’t give, or give very, very little, I challenge you to give just a little bit more. Wonderful things are going on around here and all of us, not just those 450 families that always give, need to get on board. You are needed!

Another big change is that I am changing the time of the weekday Mass (Monday through Saturday) from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. This change will take place beginning on October 2nd. For the past year, people have asked me to change the weekday Mass to 8:30 a.m. so that the school parents and kids could more conveniently come to Mass. School Liturgies will now be at 8:30 a.m., rather than the previous time of 9:30 a.m. This way, the parish community can celebrate Mass with the school on our high holy days. The time for Sunday Mass will stay the same: 8:00 a.m.

Please remember the Parish Festival (Viva Las Vegas) on September 29th to October 1st. All registered parishioners received tickets in the mail. Please turn in those tickets to either the parish or the school. I am counting on each and every parishioner to buy those tickets so that we can continue to support the good things going on in the parish and school. Thanks, in advance, for all your help!

A reminder that this year’s Town Hall Meeting will take place in the church on Wednesday, September 27th, at 7:30 p.m. Last year when we had our first meeting, we had a very good crowd. I expect the same this year as well. Important decisions need to be made this coming year and I can’t make them without your input. Please plan on attending.

Have a great week!
Father Brian

Parish Festival News

Do you have new games and “other stuff” at home or work that you have discovered that you really don’t need? Perhaps you have gifts that you would like to pass on. We can use it at the festival, along with any gift certificates from your favorite store, physician, or restaurant. Plants, cakes cookies, candles, toys, giftware, etc. are all needed and will contribute to our biggest fundraiser this year!

Booth chairpersons and assistants are need for: Goldfish booth, kiddies games, movie room, prize redemption, and the slot machines (open to anyone over 21 years old). We need items for the Silent Auction: Tickets to plays or sports events, jewelry, and non-perishable food, wines, or liquors appropriate for gift baskets.

The festival will be a great success with each family helping in any way. Please call Angi Rodriguez at (650) 873-2167 or Liza Bouska at (650) 218-7839. See you at the festival!
