To the Mater Dolorosa Family,

Food for the Poor wishes to thank you for the welcome you extended to Father White on his recent visit to your parish. On behalf of our less fortunate brothers and sisters, we thank you for having shared in their lives. They, and you, are blessed by your generosity.

We pray for all the sick in our parish, especially: Maureen Dan, Jack Devine, Florence Farrow, Jovita Guajardo, Lory Manzano, and Bob Reid.

May God bless them and their families.

Please be as generous as possible.

Dear Friends,

A typhoon hit the Philippines this past week. Over 1,000 people were killed and nearly 23,000 people have been displaced. Let us remember all these victims of this terrible tragedy in our prayers.

The Christmas mailing went out this past Tuesday. If you are a registered parishioner, you should have received the Christmas schedule and envelope by now. I hope to see you and your families at Mass during these holy days of Christmas and New Year’s.

You will notice that we have new statues for our Nativity scene this year. The parish purchased baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph statues. If you would like to purchase other statues to complete our nativity scene, please contact Fran in the rectory office. We need angels, shepherds, kings and animals. Even though we will not have these figures for this Christmas, I hope we can have the entire nativity scene ready for Christmas 2007. You might even think about buying a figure in memory of a loved one.

Today we light the second candle of our Advent Wreath. What is the meaning of the word “Advent?” According to Webster’s dictionary, Advent means: “The coming of Christ at the Incarnation.”

During these next few weeks, you are going to visit shopping malls and online catalogues where you can find those special gifts for that special day. There is no more wonderful season than the one we are now in, the period leading up to Christmas. Those who are fortunate enough to have little ones in your lives, see the excitement grow with each passing day as they visit Santa and see all the decorations at the mall, while Christmas music plays in the background. The sparkle in their eyes is one of God’s greatest gifts to us, so take your time and enjoy it right up to that special evening when Santa and his reindeer flash across the sky bringing joy to all the world’s children.

But in all that excitement, remember the meaning of Advent: The coming of Christ at the Incarnation. Remember that St. Nicholas brought gifts to the poor in the name of that child born so long ago. Perhaps you could recall that act by taking an ornament from our Giving Tree in the vestibule of the Church and buy a Target gift card for someone who won’t have such a Merry Christmas. Or perhaps you could just recall that the greatest gift to humankind by that little child so long ago. . . Salvation. So, in this time of joy, don’t forget to keep the Christ in Christmas.

Please remember David Hernandez in your prayers.

Happy Second Week of Advent!
Father Brian
