Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church
3rd Sunday of Ordinary Time
January 27, 2008 - Bulletin

The Lord is my light and my salvation.

Psalm 27

THEME OF OUR LITURGY
The light that brings salvation and rejoicing is, ultimately, Christ.

First Reading: Isaiah 8:23-9:3 God has restored the land, and brought great joy to the people. The burdens that were once laid upon them have been vanquished.

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:10-13, 17 Paul exhorts the believers at Corinth: As there is one Christ, so too must there be no divisions among you.

Gospel: Matthew 4:12-23 [12-17] After calling his first disciples, Jesus goes throughout Galilee teaching, proclaiming the gospel and curing the people of their illnesses.

The watchword today is “immediately.” Peter and Andrew, James and John all respond immediately to the call of Christ. May I be as open to God’s call and as ready to use my talents in His service as those first disciples were!

Please keep all those who are sick in our parish family in your prayers, especially:

Kayla Arangcon, Wallace Cain, Jack Devine, Dawn Hassinger, Lory Manzano and Olga Montoya.

We pray for the sick that they may experience God’s love and healing.

Dear Friends,

This past week, I was sick with the flu. I haven’t been this sick in years. Being sick gives me a greater appreciation for all my parishioners whose health is a struggle every day of their lives.

We finally paid off the last bill for the school to the tune of $19, 209. This bill was the buy-out price for three copy machines the school was purchasing. I will never be able to figure out why a school of 150 students had three big copy machines with service contracts. Anyway, the bill was paid out of a school endowment fund, and does not effect parish funds or donations. If anyone would like one of these copiers, please let me know.

I know we just finished up with Christmas, but Lent is almost upon us. Ash Wednesday is February 6th. Masses on Ash Wednesday are at 8:00 a.m., 12 Noon, and 7:30 p.m. Besides the usual 8:00 a.m. daily Mass, we will have an extra Lenten Mass on Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. We will also have Stations of the Cross, followed by Benediction, on the Fridays of Lent at 7:30 p.m.

I will be away this coming week. I have some meetings in San Diego I need to attend, plus I’ll be taking off for a few days in Los Angeles. I’ll be back in time for Ash Wednesday.

Have a great week!

Father Brian
