Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church
Second Sunday of Lent
February 17th, 2008 - Bulletin

Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you.

Psalm 33

We are on a continual journey when we are walking the paths of God’s will.

First Reading: Genesis 12:1-4a The Lord said to Abram: All the families of the earth shall find blessing in you.

Second Reading: 2 Timothy 1:8b—10 God has called us to a holy life, not because of our works but according to grace.

Gospel: Matthew 17:1-9 Atop a high mountain, Jesus was transfigured before Peter, James, and John.

EWTN’s special telecasts in February include parts 1-3 of a Lenten Parish Mission presented by Fr. William Casey, the superior of the Mercy Fathers, on February 17th & 24th at 7:00 p.m. PST, for 1 hour. EWTN is carried 24/7 on Comcast Digital Ch. 229, Astound Ch. 80, San Bruno Cable Ch. 143, DISH Satellite Ch. 261, and Direct TV Ch. 370.

“Bear your share of the hardship for the Gospel,” St. Paul tells Timothy in today’s second reading. What sacrifice is asked of me for the sake of the Gospel? How willing am I to bear my share?

Dear Friends,

Those of us who attend Church here at Mater Dolorosa parish have been blessed with many gifts. God calls us to use those gifts for the benefit of others. When everyone participates, the burden is lighter, and the Church grows and flourishes.

The Archbishop’s Annual Appeal benefits youth, elderly, sick, disabled, families, and ethnic groups. These programs assist all the parishes and the Annual Appeal even provides direct subsidies to some parishes and schools. The programs include vocation, training of priests and deacons, hospital ministry, family life programs, the Marriage Tribunal headed by our own Father Padazinski, foreign missions, communications (Catholic San Francisco), and the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women. The money also helps in evangelizing those who have not heard the Good News of Jesus. In general, this Appeal supports programs and ministries that are beyond the ability of any single parish.

I ask that each of you consider what you can do to help with this important work. Perhaps you’ll consider donating an hour’s pay for each month of the year. You can consider what you’ve done in prior years and try to do a bit more this year. Maybe you can use the giving guide in the AAA brochure that can be found on the back table in the vestibule of the Church, to help determine your gift.

It is also important to remember that Mater Dolorosa is assessed $42,600.00 this year. If parishioner pledges don’t come to that amount, it will have to come from the parish bank account. The good news is that if we pledge more than that amount, the excess is returned to us for use here in the parish. We have a golden opportunity to help the Archdiocese in it’s work and to provide for special needs here in our parish as well. Some of those special needs are repairing our stained glass windows, redoing the kitchen in the parish hall, and a new sign for the front of the Church.

I’ve already filled out my own pledge card and urge you to do the same. Your support of this campaign is strong evidence of your faith, your love of the Church, and your love for your neighbor. The generosity of the people at Mater Dolorosa is heartwarming to say the least. Thank you for all that you do.

Have a great week!

Father Brian
